Empower Kids to Care About Teeth

Portrait of toddler learning to brush his teeth.Good oral habits begin at home. If you teach your children at an early age to take care of their teeth, it will become a habit that will last a lifetime. Here at NC Pediatric Dentistry, we would like to help you to teach your children what they need to do. You will need to do your part as well.

How to Empower Your Kids to Care About Their Teeth

Proper dental care for children begins before they are old enough to walk. Here is what you can do to empower your kids to take good care of their teeth. The best way to develop a habit in your children is to teach them by example. That is why they need to see you taking good care of your teeth.

Children learn by example. They also want to be like their parents, so they will mimic what you do. Let your child see you brush your teeth every day, even if they do not yet have any teeth of their own. This will make them want to copy you, and they will be happy once they are old enough to have a toothbrush.

Your child's first visit to our office should be before his or her first birthday. Your pediatrician might even recommend that you make the first appointment as soon as the first teeth come in. At your first appointment, we will talk to you about many different things, including what your child should do at each stage of development. When your child is old enough, it is time for the first toothbrush. It is essential that he or she use the toothbrush only in the bathroom, since that will keep it special. Also, never let your child walk with a toothbrush in his or her mouth. If a child falls while chewing on a toothbrush, he or she could cut the back of their throat.

Proper brushing technique is not all that important when a child is young. It is more important that the brushing habit is developed. The technique will come later. Never do anything that will make your child afraid to visit our office. Avoid words like "hurt", "pain", "drill", and even "cavity". Instead, let your child know that the dentist is a friend.

Proper nutrition will also help to empower your children to care about their teeth. Instead of offering them candy and high sugar treats, try apple slices and carrot sticks. These can clean their teeth, and it can also help your kids to prefer healthy snacks over those that are not good for their teeth or their bodies.

These are just a few of the things that you can do to empower your kids to care about their teeth. Here at NC Pediatric Dentistry, would like to offer you encouragement and support as well. To make an appointment or if you have a question, give us a call. We want to make sure that your child always has a beautiful smile, and teeth that he or she will want to show off.
