Age 1 to 2 Visits

Two year old boy sitting on his dad's lap for dental exam.It is recommended that you bring your child in to see us for the first time before his or her first birthday. What about after that? What can you expect when your child is one and two years old? What should you be doing at home? Here at NC Pediatric Dentistry, we want to make sure that your child starts on the right foot so that he or she will have a lifetime of good oral health. Here are some things that you need to know about visiting our office before the age of three.

What You Need to Know About Pediatric Dentistry For Children Ages One and Two

Regular visits to our office are important so that we can make sure that your child's mouth and teeth are developing properly. If there is a problem, we will want to either correct it or keep an eye on it. If your child has not seen us before his or her first birthday, you need to make that appointment soon after the first birthday. We will want to check your child's mouth to see that everything is developing normally and on schedule. We will also talk to you and give you information. We will also let you know when you should have your next appointment.

What You Can Do At Home

At home, you can start to teach your child about brushing. Let your child help to pick out the right soft-bristled toothbrush. The amount of toothpaste used should be smaller than a grain of rice. Buy toothpaste without fluoride if your child swallows instead of spitting. A regular schedule should be expected for visits to our office. For most children, we will want to see them every six months. This is a schedule that should always continue, even after your child is an adult.

What To Expect For Your Second Visit

The second visit to our office should be around the time that your child is 18 months old. We will once again examine his or her mouth. If you have any questions, we will take the time to answer them. By the time a child reaches the age of two, there is a possibility that he or she will allow us to clean the teeth. Some children are still wary of it. If your child does allow us to clean his or her teeth, you should offer much praise. When your child is two, we will talk about nutrition and your child. There will be more food possibilities by this age, and we want to make sure that your child develops a love of healthy foods.

One thing to always keep in mind: if you have a fear of the dentist you cannot pass that onto your child. Playing dentist at home with a stuffed animal can help. As always, if you have any questions, we are here at NC Pediatric Dentistry would like to answer them. Call us at tbd. Remember that each child is different, even within a family. What one child was ready for, might not be the same for your second child.
