First Dental Visit

Posted on 9/15/2025 by NC Pediatric Dentisty
A smiling, excited young beautiful Black girl sits in the dental chair, eagerly awaiting her dental exam while her dentist places a bib on her.Taking your child to the dentist for the first time is a big step! It’s important to make this a positive experience, setting the stage for a lifetime of good oral health. Many parents wonder when this initial visit should happen and what to expect. Let's walk through some helpful information.

When Should We Go?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child's first dental visit occur within six months of the eruption of the first tooth, or no later than their first birthday. This might seem early, but it allows us to monitor the development of your child's teeth and gums from the very beginning. Early detection of any potential problems is key.

Preparing Your Child

How you talk about the dentist can greatly influence your child's attitude. Avoid using words that might create anxiety, such as "shot," "drill," or "hurt." Instead, use positive and encouraging language. You can read books about going to the dentist or play pretend dentist at home. Show them pictures of our office and the friendly faces they'll see. Explain that the dentist is a friendly doctor who helps keep their teeth healthy and strong.

What to Expect During the Visit

The first visit is usually short and simple. It's all about getting your child comfortable in the dental environment. We'll start by talking to you about your child's medical history and any specific concerns you might have. Then, we'll gently examine your child's mouth, checking for any signs of decay or other issues. We’ll assess their bite, gums, and the soft tissues in their mouth.

Depending on your child's age and cooperation, we might also do a gentle cleaning. We’ll demonstrate proper brushing techniques for you to use at home. We may also discuss fluoride application to help strengthen your child’s teeth and protect them from cavities.

Why is it Important?

These early dental visits aren't just about checking for cavities. They provide an opportunity for us to educate you on proper oral hygiene practices, discuss healthy eating habits, and address any concerns you have about your child's oral development. We can also help you understand the causes of early childhood cavities and how to prevent them. Establishing a dental "home" early allows for ongoing preventative care and early intervention if needed.

After the Visit

Praise your child for their bravery and cooperation, even if they were a little hesitant. Reinforce the positive experience and talk about how healthy their teeth are. This will help create a positive association with dental care and make future visits easier.

Remember, we're here to help you and your child have a positive and stress-free experience. We believe that establishing good oral hygiene habits early in life is essential for a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. We look forward to meeting you and your little one!
