Is Flossing Something Your Child Struggles With?

Posted on 2/15/2025 by NC Pediatric Dentisty

An ecstatic little girl holding an oversized toothbrush and mouth model, excited about dental care.As a parent, you want your child to have the best possible oral health. You make sure they brush their teeth twice a day, eat healthy snacks, and visit the dentist regularly. But what about flossing? Is your child struggling with this important part of their oral hygiene routine?

The truth is, flossing can be a challenge for many kids. It can be awkward, uncomfortable, and even a little scary. But it's important to remember that flossing is just as important as brushing when it comes to keeping your child's teeth and gums healthy.

Here are some reasons why your child might be struggling with flossing:

•  They don't see the point. Kids may not understand why they need to floss if they don't see or feel any food stuck between their teeth.

•  It's uncomfortable. The feeling of floss between their teeth can be strange and even unpleasant for some kids.

•  They're not sure how to do it. Flossing can be tricky, especially for young children who are still developing their fine motor skills.

•  They don't have the time. With busy schedules, kids may not always have the time or patience to floss properly.

If your child is struggling with flossing, don't give up! There are a few things you can do to make it easier for them:

•  Start early. The earlier you introduce your child to flossing, the more likely they are to accept it as part of their regular routine.

•  Make it fun. There are all sorts of fun and colorful floss options available that can make flossing more appealing to kids.

•  Be patient and positive. It takes time and practice to learn how to floss properly. Be patient with your child and encourage them to keep trying.

•  Show them how it's done. Take some time to show your child how to floss properly. Use a mirror so they can see what you're doing.

•  Let them help. Once your child has the basics down, let them try flossing on their own. You can supervise them and help them if they need it.

•  Make it a family activity. Flossing together as a family can make it more fun and encourage your child to stick with it.

Remember, the most important thing is to make flossing a regular part of your child's oral hygiene routine. Even if they don't get it perfect every time, any flossing is better than no flossing at all. With your encouragement and support, your child will learn how to floss properly and enjoy the benefits of a healthy smile.
