Teething Treatments - Exploring the Do's and Don'ts

Posted on 12/16/2024 by NC Pediatric Dentisty
young baby holding a parent's fingerTeething is a natural process that all babies go through, but it can be a challenging time for both babies and parents. As a pediatric dentist, I see firsthand how much discomfort teething can cause. While there's no magic solution, there are several things you can do to help your baby feel better and make this phase a little easier.

Do:

•  Provide a clean, cool surface for your baby to chew on. This could be a wet washcloth, a teething ring, or a chilled baby spoon. The coolness can help numb the gums and provide relief.
•  Offer your baby a variety of textures to chew on. This can help stimulate the gums and promote healthy oral development. Silicone teethers and natural rubber toys are good options.
•  Gently massage your baby's gums with a clean finger. This can help relieve some of the pressure and discomfort.
•  Use a cold compress on your baby's cheek. This can help reduce swelling and inflammation.
•  Talk to your pediatrician about pain relief options. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be helpful for some babies. However, it's important to consult your pediatrician first to ensure the medication is safe and appropriate for your baby's age and weight.

Don't:

•  Give your baby anything frozen to chew on. This can damage the gums and teeth.
•  Use teething necklaces or bracelets. These can be a choking hazard.
•  Apply numbing gels or liquids to your baby's gums. These can be dangerous if swallowed.
•  Rub whiskey or other alcohol on your baby's gums. This can be toxic and harmful to your baby.
•  Ignore your baby's cries for help. If your baby is in pain, they need your comfort and support.

Prevention Dentistry: Starting Early

Even before your baby's first tooth erupts, you can start practicing good oral care habits. Wipe your baby's gums with a clean, damp washcloth after feedings to remove any food particles. Once the first tooth appears, start brushing it twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Regular dental checkups are also important for monitoring your child's oral health and development. Your pediatric dentist can answer any questions you have about teething and provide guidance on how to care for your child's teeth.

Conclusion

Teething can be a trying time, but with the right approach, you can help your baby through it. By following the "Do's" and avoiding the "Don'ts" listed above, you can provide your baby with comfort and relief. Remember, prevention dentistry is key, so start practicing good oral care habits early and schedule regular dental checkups for your child.
