We would rather have you bring your child in and it not be an actual emergency than not to come in when you really should have.
What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?
If you are wondering whether or not something is an emergency, here is some information that might help. Again, remember that if you think it might be an emergency, we want to see your child right away.
If your child has a toothache, the first thing that you should do is to clean and rinse the area. It is not uncommon for a toothache to be caused by a small piece of food that has lodged itself next to the tooth or gums. If that does not work, call us right away so that we can find out what is going on.
A knocked-out baby tooth is usually not an emergency. It will come out eventually anyway. Have your child rinse his or her mouth with warm water. If there is blood and the bleeding will not stop after a couple of minutes, then you should come in.
If it is an adult tooth that has been knocked out, you will need to come in right away. Gently pick up the tooth by the top, not the root. You can rinse the tooth off with water if need be. If possible, stick the tooth back in the socket and have your child gently apply pressure on it. If that is not possible, put the tooth in a glass of milk and then immediately come to see us.
How To Handle Minor Injuries
If your child bites the inside of his or her mouth, or if there is a cut for another reason, it might not be an emergency. Take a piece of gauze and gently apply pressure where the bleeding is. If the bleeding does not stop in a few minutes, you will want to bring your child in.
A chipped tooth is often considered a dental emergency. If there is no pain associated with the chipped tooth, gently run your finger over the top of it to see if it is rough. If it is, we will want to see your child right away. If it is not rough and there still is no pain, call us to let us know about it, but we might not ask you to come in right away.
