Dr. David E. Thome

Dr. David E. ThomeDr. Thome, a native of Colorado, obtained his dental degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in 2001. Following seven years of successful practice as a general dentist in Kansas City, MO, Dr. Thome followed his heartfelt passion: pediatric dentistry. He completed his pediatric dental residency at Nova Southeastern University, during which he had the privilege of treating numerous patients at the esteemed Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

Dr. Thome is deeply committed to the evolution and enhancement of dentistry. He regularly facilitates educational workshops for his peers across the practice, focusing on gentle, less invasive techniques and a holistic approach to dentistry. In most cases, anesthesia is not necessary for fillings and can be performed successfully using laser technology. The Fotona Lightwalker dual laser has revolutionized pediatric dentistry by offering a less invasive and more comfortable experience. Additionally, this technology allows for minimally invasive frenectomies/frenotomies/tethered oral treatments.

Pediatric dentistry is the only medical profession with consistent and direct visualization of the upper airway. Growth and development start right at birth through breastfeeding, influencing the child’s entire life. Delaying the first examination until the child is one year old or has their first tooth is simply too late. Dr. Thome is steadfast in his mission to make procedures available to all of North Carolina that make dentistry less invasive and contribute to the overall health of children. His innovative approach combines Laser Dentistry, the Toothpillow method, and the Postural Blueprint, creating a comprehensive healthcare strategy that addresses the needs of patients from infancy through adolescence.

Our guiding philosophy at NCPD is rooted in the belief that parents, as primary caregivers, should be provided with a variety of treatment options for their children. As dentistry evolves, it’s essential that children in North Carolina gain access to high-quality services, including:

•  Porcelain crowns
•  Minimally invasive frenectomies that don’t burn the tissue and require weeks of healing
•  Definitive treatment for cold sores
•  Simple fillings without needing a shot
•  The presence of parents alongside their child during routine procedures
•  Disease management protocols tailored for children with special needs

We collaborate closely with parents to create a treatment plan that is both safe and tailored to each child’s needs. Our primary goal is to identify the underlying causes of cavities, which are a small part of a child’s health — such as mouth breathing, which significantly contributes to them—and to educate caregivers on overall health. While cavities are just one aspect of a child's well-being, the development of the airway plays a crucial role in the health of the teeth and the entire body, particularly in ensuring adequate oxygen supply to a child's brain. At NC Pediatric Dentistry, we are committed to partnering with parents to provide their children with the opportunity for a healthy life that every child deserves.
