Super Orthodontic Wires

Posted on 10/1/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentistry
Teenage girls smilingHave you ever wondered how braces actually move teeth? It’s not magic, but it's pretty cool science! The main workhorses of braces are the wires that connect all the brackets. These aren't just any ordinary pieces of metal; they are specially designed to gently guide your teeth into their ideal positions. Let's explore the fascinating world of orthodontic wires.

The Science Behind the Smile

Orthodontic wires work by applying consistent, gentle pressure to your teeth. This pressure stimulates the bone around the roots of your teeth. On one side of the tooth, bone cells called osteoclasts break down the bone, while on the other side, bone cells called osteoblasts build new bone. This process, called bone remodeling, allows the teeth to slowly move through the bone over time. The wire acts as a spring, always trying to return to its original shape, and in doing so, it pulls or pushes the teeth along the desired path.

Different Wires for Different Jobs

Not all orthodontic wires are created equal! There are several types, each with unique properties that make them suitable for different stages of treatment. Early in treatment, super flexible wires are often used. These wires are made of materials like nickel-titanium (NiTi) and are very good at bending without breaking. This is important because the teeth are often very crooked at the beginning, and a flexible wire can follow the curves of the arch without putting too much stress on any one tooth.

As treatment progresses and the teeth become more aligned, stiffer wires are often used. These wires, often made of stainless steel, are more resistant to bending and are better at controlling the final positions of the teeth. They can also be used to close spaces between teeth and to make more precise adjustments.

The Magic of Nickel-Titanium

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires are truly remarkable. These wires have a special property called "shape memory." This means that the wire can be bent and deformed, but it will always try to return to its original shape. This property allows NiTi wires to apply a consistent, gentle force to the teeth over a long period of time, even as the teeth move. NiTi wires are also very resistant to breaking, which makes them a great choice for patients who are active or who have a tendency to break things.

Considerations for Comfort

Modern orthodontic wires are designed with patient comfort in mind. The gentle forces applied by these wires minimize discomfort. Also, the smooth surface of the wires reduces friction and makes them easier to clean. Regular check-ups with your orthodontist are essential to ensure that the wires are properly adjusted and that any discomfort is addressed promptly. Your orthodontist might use special tools to bend or cut the wires to achieve the desired tooth movement. Sometimes, a wire might poke or irritate your cheek; this is usually easily resolved with wax or a quick adjustment.

Taking Care of Your Wires

Proper care of your braces and wires is essential for successful treatment. Be sure to brush your teeth after every meal and to floss daily. Avoid sticky or hard foods that could damage the wires or brackets. If a wire breaks or becomes dislodged, contact your orthodontist right away for an appointment.
