Teething Toddlers - 3 Foods to Soothe Sore Gums

Posted on 9/1/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentistry
Cute little babyTeething is a big milestone for your little one, but it can also be a tough time for everyone involved! As those tiny teeth start pushing through, your toddler might experience discomfort. This can lead to fussiness, drooling, and a general feeling of being unwell. One common symptom is sore gums, which can make eating a challenge. But don't worry! There are things you can do to help ease the discomfort.

Here are 3 food options to help soothe your toddler's sore gums:

# Cool and Creamy Options

Think about foods that are cold and have a smooth texture. These are gentle on irritated gums and can provide a soothing sensation.

•  Yogurt: Chilled yogurt is a fantastic choice. It's packed with calcium for growing teeth and has a cool, creamy texture that feels good on inflamed gums. Opt for plain yogurt with no added sugar to promote healthy teeth development. You can mix in a little bit of fruit puree for added flavor and nutrition.
•  Applesauce: This classic baby food is also great for teething toddlers. The smooth texture is easy to eat, and the natural sweetness can be appealing. Make sure it's chilled for extra relief. You can also find applesauce with added spices like cinnamon, which can provide a comforting flavor.

# Soft and Squishy Fruits

Some fruits naturally have a soft texture that requires minimal chewing, making them ideal for tender gums.

•  Banana: A ripe banana is naturally sweet, soft, and easy for your toddler to manage. The potassium in bananas is also beneficial. You can even chill the banana in the refrigerator for a bit before serving for an extra cooling effect. Consider cutting the banana into small pieces or mashing it slightly for even easier consumption.

# Hydrating and Refreshing Treats

Sometimes, the simple act of providing something cool and hydrating can make a big difference.

•  Cucumber: While not traditionally thought of as a teething food, peeled and sliced cucumber can be very soothing. The high water content helps keep your toddler hydrated, and the cool temperature can numb sore gums. Just make sure the slices are thin and easy to chew to prevent choking.

# Important Reminders

Always supervise your child while they are eating, especially when they are teething and potentially more distracted or uncomfortable. Make sure any foods you offer are age-appropriate and easy to chew to prevent choking hazards.

Remember to maintain good oral hygiene even during teething. Gently wipe your toddler's gums with a soft, damp cloth after meals to remove any food particles and bacteria. This helps establish healthy habits early on and prevents future dental problems.

Teething can be a challenging time, but with a little patience and the right foods, you can help your toddler find relief from sore gums and continue to enjoy mealtimes. If you have concerns about your child's teething or oral health, always reach out to your pediatric dentist for personalized advice and support.
