How to Help Your Kid Overcome Their Fear of Dentists

Posted on 1/15/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentisty
A pediatric dentist examines a calm girl's mouth while her mother watches during a routine dental checkup. Is your child nervous about visiting the child dentist? It's really common! Lots of kids feel anxious about dental appointments, but there are many ways we can work together to make these visits easier and even positive experiences. Let’s explore some helpful strategies.

Preparing for the Visit

The key to a successful dental visit often starts before you even walk through the door. It's important to talk to your child about what to expect. Use simple, age-appropriate language to explain what will happen during the appointment.

For younger children, you can say something like, "The dentist is going to count your teeth and make sure they're happy and healthy." Avoid using words that might sound scary, such as "drill," "needle," or "hurt." Instead, use softer terms like "special toothbrush," "sleepy juice," or "tickle."

Role-playing can also be a helpful tool. Pretend to be the dentist and let your child be the patient. This allows them to become familiar with the process in a safe and fun environment. You can even read children’s books about going to the dentist together.

Choosing the Right Dentist

Finding the right child dentist is also important. A pediatric dentist has specialized training in working with children and understands their unique needs and anxieties. They are experienced in creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for young patients. Look for a dentist who is patient, friendly, and good at explaining things in a way that kids can understand.

Consider visiting the office beforehand. This allows your child to meet the dentist and staff, see the treatment rooms, and get a feel for the atmosphere. A positive first impression can go a long way in easing their fears.

During the Appointment

During the appointment, stay calm and positive. Your child will pick up on your emotions, so it's important to project confidence and reassurance. Hold their hand, offer words of encouragement, and remind them that you're there for them.

Distraction techniques can be very effective. Bring a favorite toy, book, or device to keep your child entertained during the appointment. Some dentists also offer TVs or movies to help distract children.

Positive reinforcement is another helpful tool. Praise your child for their bravery and cooperation. After the appointment, reward them with a small treat or fun activity. This will help them associate dental visits with positive experiences.

Open Communication

Encourage your child to express their feelings and concerns. Listen to their fears and validate their emotions. Let them know that it's okay to be nervous and that you're there to support them.

Work with the child dentist to develop a plan that works best for your child. The dentist may suggest using techniques such as tell-show-do, where they explain what they're going to do, show the tools, and then perform the procedure. This can help reduce anxiety by giving your child a sense of control and predictability.

By taking these steps, you can help your child overcome their fear of dentists and establish a lifetime of good oral health habits. Remember, patience and understanding are key!
