Five Yummy and Healthy Snacks for Healthy Teeth in Children

Posted on 5/15/2025 by NC Pediatric Dentisty
Father and young daughter cooking in the kitchenAs a child dentist, I often see the impact that sugary snacks and drinks have on children's teeth. Cavities, enamel erosion, and even tooth loss can occur if children don't eat a healthy diet. But getting kids to choose healthy snacks can be a challenge. That's why I've put together a list of five yummy and healthy snacks that your child will love and that are good for their teeth.

1. Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are naturally sweet and packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They're also low in calories and fat, making them a perfect snack for kids of all ages. Some great options include:

•  Apples: Apples are a good source of fiber and vitamin C. They also help to clean teeth as you chew them.
•  Bananas: Bananas are a good source of potassium and vitamin B6. They're also soft and easy for younger children to chew.
•  Carrots: Carrots are a good source of vitamin A and fiber. They're also crunchy and satisfying, which can help to keep kids full between meals.
•  Celery: Celery is a good source of vitamin K and folate. It's also low in calories and fat.
•  Strawberries: Strawberries are a good source of vitamin C and manganese. They're also sweet and juicy, which makes them a refreshing snack.

You can serve fruits and vegetables plain, with a little bit of yogurt or hummus, or even blend them into a smoothie.

2. Cheese

Cheese is a good source of calcium and protein, both of which are important for healthy teeth. It's also a versatile snack that can be enjoyed on its own, with crackers, or in sandwiches. Some good options include:

•  Cheddar cheese: Cheddar cheese is a good source of calcium and protein. It's also relatively low in fat.
•  Mozzarella cheese: Mozzarella cheese is a good source of calcium and protein. It's also soft and melty, making it a good choice for younger children.
•  String cheese: String cheese is a good source of calcium and protein. It's also individually portioned, making it a convenient snack for on-the-go.

When choosing cheese for your child, look for options that are low in sugar and fat.

3. Yogurt

Yogurt is a good source of calcium, protein, and probiotics, which are good for gut health. It's also a versatile snack that can be enjoyed on its own, with fruit, or in smoothies. Some good options include:

•  Plain yogurt: Plain yogurt is a good source of calcium and protein. It's also low in sugar and fat. You can add your own fruit or honey to sweeten it.
•  Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is a good source of calcium, protein, and probiotics. It's also thicker than regular yogurt, making it more filling.
•  Frozen yogurt: Frozen yogurt is a good source of calcium and protein. It's also a refreshing treat on a hot day.

When choosing yogurt for your child, look for options that are low in sugar and fat.

4. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a good source of protein, healthy fats, and fiber. They're also relatively low in sugar, making them a good snack for kids of all ages. Some good options include:

•  Almonds: Almonds are a good source of vitamin E and magnesium. They're also crunchy and satisfying.
•  Cashews: Cashews are a good source of copper and zinc. They're also soft and creamy.
•  Peanuts: Peanuts are a good source of protein and niacin. They're also relatively low in fat.
•  Sunflower seeds: Sunflower seeds are a good source of vitamin E and selenium. They're also crunchy and fun to eat.

When giving nuts and seeds to young children, be sure to supervise them to prevent choking. You can also grind nuts and seeds into a paste and spread them on crackers or toast.

5. Hard-Boiled Eggs

Hard-boiled eggs are a good source of protein and vitamin D, both of which are important for healthy teeth. They're also a versatile snack that can be enjoyed on its own, with crackers, or in salads.

Conclusion

These are just a few ideas for healthy snacks that your child will love. By offering your child a variety of healthy snacks, you can help them develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. And, of course, don't forget to schedule regular checkups with your child dentist to ensure their oral health is in tip-top shape!
