When to Start Braces - A Guide for Parents

While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, there are some important factors to consider that can help guide your decision.

The Importance of Early Evaluation

Many parents are surprised to learn that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This early assessment allows the orthodontist to identify any potential problems with the development of your child's teeth and jaws. Even if you don't see any obvious issues, early intervention can prevent more complex problems from developing later on.

Common Signs Your Child May Need Braces

While an orthodontic evaluation is the best way to determine if your child needs braces, there are some common signs that may indicate a potential need. These include:

•  Crowded teeth: This is when there isn't enough space in the jaw for all of the permanent teeth to erupt properly. Crowding can lead to difficulty cleaning teeth, which can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease.
•  Spacing between teeth: Gaps between teeth are less common than crowding, but they can also disrupt proper jaw development.
•  Overbite or underbite: An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth protrude significantly beyond the lower front teeth. An underbite is the opposite, with the lower front teeth protruding beyond the upper front teeth. Both can affect biting, chewing, and speaking.
•  Crossbite: This is when the upper teeth bite inside of the lower teeth, rather than the other way around. Crossbite can cause uneven wear on the teeth and interfere with proper jaw function.
•  Open bite: An open bite occurs when the front teeth don't overlap when biting down, leaving a space between them. This can make it difficult to bite and chew food.

Factors to Consider for Starting Braces

Once an orthodontic evaluation has been performed and a need for braces identified, there are a few key factors to consider before starting treatment:

•  Maturity level: Braces require some responsibility from the patient, including proper brushing and flossing, wearing elastics as instructed, and avoiding certain foods. It's important to ensure your child is ready to handle these responsibilities before starting treatment.
•  Timing of permanent teeth: In most cases, braces are placed when all or most of the permanent teeth have erupted. This ensures the best possible outcome for treatment.
•  Treatment goals: The specific treatment goals will determine the type and duration of orthodontic treatment. Understanding these goals and the expected outcome can help you and your child make an informed decision.

The Benefits of Early Treatment

While braces are often associated with teenagers, there are several benefits to starting treatment earlier, including:

•  Guiding jaw growth: Early intervention can help guide the development of the jaw, preventing more complex problems later on.
•  Improving oral hygiene: Straighter teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
•  Boosting confidence: A beautiful smile can give your child a confidence boost, especially at a time when they are starting school or making new friends.

Next Steps: Talking to an Orthodontist

If you have any concerns about your child's oral health or development, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with an orthodontist. They will be able to assess your child's individual needs and recommend the best course of treatment, if needed.
