What Are Shark Teeth, and Is It a Problem?

Little boy eating a large piece of watermelon.Every parent wants the best for their child's dental health. One condition parents might encounter is what's known as 'shark teeth,' where permanent teeth start growing in behind baby teeth. While it can be concerning, it's not always problematic and can often be treated easily.

It's important not to confuse shark teeth with another condition called dens invaginatus, which involves a deep pit or groove in the tooth. Both conditions require attention but are treated differently.

What Causes Shark Teeth?

Shark teeth occur when a permanent tooth erupts behind a baby tooth that hasn’t fallen out. This can happen when the roots of the baby teeth don't dissolve properly, allowing the permanent teeth to grow in a second row. It often occurs during the development of permanent teeth, though it can also affect baby teeth.

Why Are Shark Teeth a Problem?

While shark teeth can look alarming, they often resolve on their own. However, in some cases, they can cause crowding or misalignment, which may require dental intervention. The deep pit in the tooth can trap food and bacteria, making it difficult to clean and increasing the risk of cavities and infections.

Additionally, the weakened enamel around the pit can chip or break, leading to further complications. In severe cases, the tooth may need to be extracted.

How are Shark Teeth Treated?

The treatment for shark teeth depends on the severity of the condition. In some cases, simply keeping the area clean and monitoring the tooth may be enough. However, if the pit is deep or there are signs of decay, further intervention may be necessary.

This could involve:

•  Filling: Filling the pit with a composite material to prevent food and bacteria from accumulating.
•  Crown: Placing a crown over the tooth to protect it from further damage.
•  Extraction: In severe cases, extracting the tooth may be the best option.

Early Detection is Key

As with most dental issues, early detection is key in preventing complications. If you notice permanent teeth growing behind baby teeth, or if baby teeth aren't falling out, schedule a visit with your pediatric dentist. They can assess the situation and recommend the best course of treatment.

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

The best way to prevent shark teeth and other dental problems is to maintain good oral hygiene. This includes:

•  Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
•  Flossing daily to remove food particles from between the teeth.
•  Visiting your pediatric dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Conclusion

Shark teeth, while not as ferocious as their namesake, can still pose a threat to your child's dental health. By understanding the condition and taking steps to prevent and treat it, you can help your child maintain a healthy, happy smile.
