When to Start Kids Braces?

Posted on 5/1/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentistry
Girl with bracesGetting braces is a big step, and knowing when the right time is for your child can feel confusing. As a pediatric dentist, I often get asked about the best age to begin orthodontic treatment. It's not a one-size-fits-all answer, but understanding the key factors can help you make the best decision for your child's smile. Let's explore the world of kids' braces!

Early Evaluation: A Proactive Approach

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation around the age of seven. Why so early? At this age, kids usually have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This allows us to see how the jaw is developing and identify any potential problems early on.

This doesn't necessarily mean your child will get braces at seven! It simply means we can spot issues like crowding, crossbites, or jaw alignment problems that might benefit from early intervention. Sometimes, early treatment can prevent more complex problems later on, potentially shortening the overall time spent in braces.

Two Phases of Treatment: Understanding the Options

Orthodontic treatment is sometimes divided into two phases: Phase 1 and Phase 2.

•  Phase 1 (Early Interceptive Treatment): This phase typically occurs while a child still has some baby teeth. The goal is to address significant jaw growth issues or severe bite problems. This might involve using appliances like expanders to widen the palate or partial braces to guide the eruption of permanent teeth. The purpose is to create a more favorable environment for the remaining permanent teeth to come in.
•  Phase 2 (Comprehensive Treatment): This phase usually begins once most or all of the permanent teeth have erupted. It involves full braces (or other orthodontic appliances) to straighten the teeth and correct any remaining bite issues.

Not every child needs Phase 1 treatment. For many, starting treatment in the early teen years, when all permanent teeth are present, is perfectly fine.

Factors Influencing the Timing

Several factors influence the ideal time to start orthodontic treatment:

•  Dental Development: The eruption pattern of permanent teeth is a major consideration. We want to make sure enough permanent teeth are present to allow for effective treatment.
•  Jaw Growth: Jaw growth plays a crucial role in bite alignment. Addressing jaw discrepancies during growth spurts can be more effective.
•  Severity of the Problem: Minor misalignments might not require early intervention, while more severe problems like significant crowding or crossbites might benefit from earlier treatment.
•  Patient Cooperation: Orthodontic treatment requires commitment and good oral hygiene. A child who is motivated and able to follow instructions will have a more successful outcome.

Beyond Aesthetics: Health Benefits

While a straighter smile is a wonderful benefit of orthodontics, it's important to remember that braces can also improve overall oral health. Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Correcting bite problems can also alleviate jaw pain and improve chewing function.

The Importance of a Personalized Approach

Ultimately, the decision of when to start orthodontic treatment is a personal one that should be made in consultation with a qualified dental professional. A thorough examination, including x-rays and impressions, will help us assess your child's individual needs and develop a customized treatment plan.
