What Kind of Floss?

Posted on 5/15/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentistry
Little girl flossingLet's talk about something super important for a healthy smile: floss! We all know we should floss, but sometimes it feels like a chore. And with so many different types of floss out there, it can be confusing to know which one is right for you. Think of this as your friendly guide to navigating the floss aisle!

# Why Floss Anyway?

Before we dive into the types of floss, let's quickly recap why it's so crucial. Brushing is fantastic for cleaning the surfaces of your teeth, but it can't reach those tight spaces between your teeth where food particles and plaque love to hide. Floss is the superhero that swoops in to clean those areas, preventing cavities and gum disease. Ignoring those areas is like only washing half your face!

# The Contenders: Different Types of Floss

Okay, now for the fun part – exploring the different types of floss! Here's a breakdown of some common options:

•  Nylon (Multi-filament) Floss: This is probably what you picture when you think of floss. It's made of several strands of nylon woven together. It’s generally affordable and widely available. However, because it's made of multiple strands, it can sometimes shred or tear, especially if you have tight spaces between your teeth.
•  PTFE (Monofilament) Floss: Also known as Teflon floss, this type is made of a single strand of material. It's known for its smooth texture and ability to slide easily between teeth, even those that are close together. It's less likely to shred or break compared to nylon floss, making it a good option if you've had trouble with shredding in the past.
•  Waxed vs. Unwaxed Floss: Both nylon and PTFE floss can come in waxed or unwaxed varieties. Waxed floss has a thin coating of wax that helps it glide more easily between teeth. Some people find waxed floss more comfortable, especially if they have sensitive gums. Unwaxed floss can sometimes feel a bit "grippier," which some people prefer because they feel it cleans more effectively. Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference.
•  Floss Picks: These are small plastic handles with a piece of floss stretched between two prongs. They can be convenient for on-the-go flossing or for people who have difficulty using traditional floss. However, some dentists feel that floss picks don't allow you to wrap the floss around the tooth in the same way as traditional floss, which can limit their effectiveness.
•  Dental Tape: This is a wider, flatter version of floss. It's a good option for people with larger spaces between their teeth.

# Choosing the Right Floss for You

So, with all these options, how do you choose the right floss? Here are a few things to consider:

•  The Tightness of Your Teeth: If your teeth are very close together, PTFE floss or waxed floss might be a good choice.
•  Your Gum Sensitivity: If you have sensitive gums, waxed floss or a softer nylon floss might be more comfortable.
•  Your Dexterity: If you have trouble using traditional floss, floss picks might be a helpful alternative.
•  Your Personal Preference: Ultimately, the best floss is the one you'll actually use consistently! Try a few different types and see which one you like best.

# A Few Extra Tips

•  Don't be afraid to ask your dental hygienist or dentist for recommendations. They can assess your individual needs and suggest the best type of floss for you.
•  Use the right technique. Gently slide the floss between your teeth and curve it around each tooth in a "C" shape.
•  Be gentle! Avoid snapping the floss against your gums.
•  Floss at least once a day. It doesn't matter whether you floss in the morning or at night, as long as you do it!

Flossing is a simple but powerful tool for keeping your smile healthy and bright. By understanding the different types of floss and finding one that works for you, you can make flossing a regular part of your oral hygiene routine. And remember, a little bit of floss goes a long way!
