Is There Such A Thing As Pediatric Gum Disease?

Posted on 1/15/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentisty
A young child sits calmly in the dental chair on his own, opening his mouth for his pediatric dentist to perform a routine dental examination using common dental tools. It might surprise you to learn that keeping gums healthy isn't just important for adults. Children, too, can experience problems with their gums, and it's important for parents to understand what to look for and how to prevent issues from developing. Let's dive into the world of children's gum health!

What is Gum Disease?

"Gum disease" is a broad term describing infections of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. In adults, it's often called periodontitis and is a leading cause of tooth loss. While periodontitis is less common in children, milder forms of gum disease, like gingivitis, are frequently seen.

Gingivitis: The Early Stage

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. It's primarily caused by plaque buildup around the teeth. Plaque is that sticky film that constantly forms on our teeth, filled with bacteria. When plaque isn't removed through regular brushing and flossing, it irritates the gums, leading to inflammation.

What does gingivitis look like in children? The most common signs are red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing. Sometimes, the gums might also feel tender. The good news is that gingivitis is usually reversible with good oral hygiene.

More Serious Gum Problems in Children

While gingivitis is the most common type of gum problem in children, other more serious conditions can occur, although they are less frequent. These might include:

•  Aggressive Periodontitis: A rapidly progressing form of gum disease that can lead to bone loss around the teeth. This is rare, but can occur in adolescents.
•  Localized Aggressive Periodontitis: Similar to aggressive periodontitis, but affecting only certain teeth.
•  Gingival Recession: The gums pull back, exposing more of the tooth.

What Causes Gum Disease in Children?

Several factors can contribute to the development of gum problems in children:

•  Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing allow plaque to accumulate.
•  Diet: A diet high in sugary foods and drinks can fuel the bacteria in plaque, increasing the risk of gum disease.
•  Orthodontic Appliances: Braces can make it harder to clean teeth properly, leading to plaque buildup.
•  Certain Medical Conditions: Some medical conditions, like diabetes, can increase a child's susceptibility to gum disease.
•  Genetics: A family history of gum disease can also play a role.

How to Prevent Gum Problems

Preventing gum problems is easier than treating them! Here are some key steps:

•  Brush Regularly: Brush teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Make sure your child is using proper brushing techniques, reaching all surfaces of the teeth.
•  Floss Daily: Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth, where a toothbrush can't reach.
•  Healthy Diet: Limit sugary snacks and drinks. Encourage a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
•  Regular Dental Checkups: Professional cleanings and examinations are crucial for removing plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) and detecting early signs of gum problems.

Gum Health is Important

Taking care of your child's gums is an important part of their overall health. By understanding the signs of gum disease and taking preventive measures, you can help your child maintain a healthy smile for years to come. Talk to your pediatric dentist if you have any concerns about your child's gums. They can provide personalized advice and treatment recommendations.
