Ways to Prevent Holiday Cavities in Children

Posted on 6/16/2025 by NC Pediatric Dentisty

Between the abundance of sugary treats and the disruption of regular routines, it can be challenging to keep your child's oral health on track. But don't worry, there are plenty of ways to prevent holiday cavities and keep your child's smile healthy and bright.

Limit Sugary Treats

It's no secret that sugar is a major culprit in tooth decay. During the holidays, it's easy for children to overindulge in sweets, from cookies and candies to cakes and pies. While it's okay to let your child enjoy some treats, it's important to limit their intake and encourage them to choose healthier options whenever possible.

•  Offer fruits and vegetables as snacks. Fruits and vegetables are naturally sweet and packed with nutrients that are good for your child's overall health, including their teeth.
•  Choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate. Dark chocolate contains less sugar and more antioxidants than milk chocolate, making it a slightly healthier option.
•  Make your own treats. This way, you can control the amount of sugar that goes into them. There are many healthy and delicious recipes available online and in cookbooks.

Maintain a Regular Oral Hygiene Routine

Brushing and flossing are essential for removing plaque and food particles that can contribute to cavities. During the holidays, it's important to stick to your child's regular brushing and flossing routine, even when traveling or visiting family.

•  Brush twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a fluoride toothpaste that is appropriate for your child's age.
•  Floss once a day. This will help remove plaque and food particles from between your child's teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  Use mouthwash. Mouthwash can help kill bacteria and freshen breath. Choose a mouthwash that is alcohol-free and specifically designed for children.

Schedule Regular Dental Checkups

Regular dental checkups are an important part of preventive care. Your child's dentist can examine their teeth for signs of cavities and provide professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar. They can also offer guidance on how to keep your child's teeth healthy during the holidays and throughout the year.

•  Schedule a checkup every six months. This is the recommended frequency for most children.
•  Talk to your dentist about any concerns you have about your child's oral health. They can provide you with personalized advice and recommendations.

Encourage Water Consumption

Water is essential for good oral health. It helps wash away food particles and bacteria, and it also helps to keep your child's mouth hydrated, which can help prevent cavities.

•  Make sure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day. Aim for at least eight glasses per day.
•  Offer water instead of sugary drinks. Sugary drinks, such as soda, juice, and sports drinks, are major contributors to cavities.

Make Oral Hygiene Fun

Many children find brushing and flossing to be a chore. You can make it more fun and engaging by:

•  Letting them choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste. There are many fun and colorful options available that can make brushing more appealing.
•  Playing music while they brush. This can help to make the time pass more quickly and make it more enjoyable.
•  Using a timer. This can help your child stay focused and motivated while they brush.
•  Turning brushing and flossing into a game. See who can brush the longest or who can floss the most teeth without breaking the string.

By following these tips, you can help your child prevent holiday cavities and keep their smile healthy and bright all year long. Remember, good oral hygiene is an important part of overall health, so make sure to make it a priority for your child during the holidays and beyond.
