Keeping Your Child's Teeth Safe When They Have the Flu

Not only are they dealing with the typical symptoms like fever, chills, and body aches, but they may also have a hard time eating and drinking, which can make it difficult to keep their teeth clean.

If your child has the flu, there are a few things you can do to help keep their teeth safe:

Encourage good oral care habits

Even though your child may not feel up to it, it's important to continue brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing once a day. If they're too tired to do it themselves, you can help them.

Make sure they stay hydrated

Dehydration can make it harder for your child to fight off the flu and can also lead to dry mouth, which can increase their risk of cavities. Encourage them to drink plenty of fluids, such as water, juice, or clear broth.

Avoid sugary drinks and snacks

Sugary drinks and snacks can contribute to tooth decay, so it's best to avoid them while your child is sick. Offer them healthy alternatives like fruits, vegetables, and yogurt.

See a dentist if you notice any problems

If you notice any changes in your child's mouth, such as white spots on their teeth, bleeding gums, or pain, make an appointment with their dentist. These could be signs of a more serious problem that needs to be treated.

Restoration dentistry

In some cases, children who have had the flu may need to have restoration dentistry done to repair any damage to their teeth. This could include fillings, crowns, or even root canals.

Keep your child home from school

This will help prevent the spread of the flu to other children.

Wash your hands often

This will help prevent the spread of germs.

Get your child vaccinated against the flu

The flu vaccine is the best way to protect your child from getting the flu.

By following these tips, you can help keep your child's teeth safe and healthy even when they have the flu.
