Floss - What Kind?

Little girl flossing at NC Pediatric Dentistry in Mooresville, NC Flossing your teeth is an essential part of good oral hygiene, along with brushing and using mouthwash. It helps remove plaque and food debris from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. This helps prevent cavities and gum disease.

But with so many different types of floss available, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. Here's a breakdown of the most common types of floss and their pros and cons:

Types of Floss:

•  Traditional Nylon Floss: This is the most common type of floss. It's made of thin nylon fibers and is available in waxed and unwaxed varieties. Waxed floss is easier to slide between your teeth, but it can be more difficult to remove plaque. Unwaxed floss is more abrasive, but it can be more effective at removing plaque.
•  Dental Tape: This type of floss is wider and flatter than traditional floss, making it easier to clean between teeth that are spaced further apart. It's also a good choice for people with braces or bridges.
•  Water Flosser: This is a device that uses a stream of water to clean between your teeth. It's a good option for people who have difficulty using traditional floss, such as those with arthritis or braces.
•  Interdental Brushes: These are small, cone-shaped brushes that are designed to clean between your teeth. They're a good option for people with large gaps between their teeth.

Choosing the Right Floss:

The best type of floss for you depends on your individual needs and preferences. Consider the following factors when choosing a floss:

•  The size of your teeth: If you have small teeth, you may need to use a thinner floss. If you have large teeth, you may need to use a thicker floss or dental tape.
•  The spacing between your teeth: If you have tight spaces between your teeth, you may need to use a floss that is more slippery, such as waxed floss. If you have larger spaces between your teeth, you may be able to use any type of floss.
•  Your dexterity: If you have difficulty using traditional floss, you may want to try a water flosser or interdental brushes.

Additional Tips:

•  Regardless of the type of floss you choose, be sure to use it gently and avoid snapping it against your gums.
•  Floss at least once a day, preferably before bed.
•  If you have any questions about flossing, talk to your dentist or hygienist.

By following these tips, you can choose the right type of floss for your needs and keep your smile healthy and bright.
