Floss - What Kind?

Little girl trying to flossFlossing daily is an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene. It helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. But with so many different types of floss available, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you.

Types of Floss

•  Nylon floss: This is the most common type of floss and is readily available at most drugstores and grocery stores. It is inexpensive and effective, but it can be shred or break easily, especially if you have tight teeth.
•  Monofilament floss: This type of floss is made of a single filament of nylon, which makes it very smooth and less likely to shred. It is a good choice for people with tight teeth or braces.
•  Waxed floss: This type of floss is coated with a thin layer of wax, which makes it easier to slide between your teeth. However, it can be more difficult to remove plaque and food particles.
•  Unwaxed floss: This type of floss is not coated with wax, which makes it more effective at removing plaque and food particles. However, it can be more difficult to use and may shred more easily.
•  Flavored floss: This type of floss comes in a variety of flavors, which can make it more appealing to children. However, the flavors can sometimes be overwhelming and may not be suitable for people with sensitive teeth.
•  Water Flosser: This is a device that uses a stream of water to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth. It is a good choice for people who have difficulty flossing with traditional floss.

How to Choose the Right Floss for You

The best type of floss for you depends on your individual needs and preferences. Here are a few things to consider:

•  The size of your teeth: If you have small teeth, you may want to choose a thinner floss, such as monofilament floss. If you have large teeth, you may want to choose a thicker floss, such as nylon floss.
•  Your dexterity: If you have difficulty flossing with traditional floss, you may want to consider using a water flosser.
•  Your budget: Nylon floss is the least expensive type of floss, while water flossers are the most expensive.
•  Your personal preferences: Some people prefer waxed floss, while others prefer unwaxed floss. Some people like flavored floss, while others find it overwhelming.

Additional Tips

•  Ask your dentist or hygienist for recommendations. They can help you choose the right type of floss for your individual needs.
•  Try different types of floss to find one that you like. It may take some trial and error to find the right floss for you.
•  Be gentle when flossing. Don't force the floss between your teeth.
•  Floss at least once a day. The best time to floss is before bed, after you have brushed your teeth.

Flossing is an important part of maintaining good oral hygiene. By choosing the right type of floss and flossing daily, you can help keep your teeth and gums healthy.
