Should Kids Floss Every Single Day?

Just like brushing, flossing helps get rid of bacteria and stuck food particles. While most people remember to brush their teeth, a good number of them don't floss. This is unfortunate because it increases the risk of infections. Flossing in kids is equally important. You need to encourage your kid to floss every single day. This will help keep their oral health in good condition.

The Importance of Flossing

Flossing every day is crucial for good oral health among children. On its own, brushing can't reach every side of teeth. This means that when your child skips flossing, they will not be cleaning their teeth thoroughly. In fact, if you skip flossing for a single day, about 40% of the tooth surface isn't cleaned. As a result, a lot of bacteria and plaque are left on the surface of your child's teeth. This poses a great risk to their oral health.

If your kid doesn't floss, the risk of developing oral infections is high. Some of these infections can worsen and lead to early tooth loss. This happens because the left plaque will harden into tartar. Tartar is very hard and will need professional cleaning to come out. Excessive tartar can also stain your child's teeth.

Furthermore, your kid could also develop dental cavities due to a lack of flossing. Such infections can trigger other oral conditions like gum disease. Given their early stage of teeth development, some oral problems can affect your child's speech development.

It is important to teach your child proper flossing methods. Remember that their gums are tender and soft, meaning they can easily be damaged by aggressive flossing. Therefore, you should teach your child how to floss thoroughly but gently. Contact us for more information on the importance of flossing in children.
